Course Description:
Sally Shaywtiz has finally come out with her second edition of Overcoming Dyslexia. A ground breaking, blockbuster of a book that shattered myths and provided parents and professionals with scientific information on dyslexia that includes explaining the nature of dyslexia and reading, operationalizing and diagnosing dyslexia, giving assistance to the child in reading and turning poor readers into excellent readers, choosing a school that would meet the needs of a dyslexic child and dealing with dyslexia successfully after high school and beyond.
The research is comprehensive. Dyslexia can be treated and Shaywitz makes it clear what methods should be used. Clear identification and a good understanding of what is happening when a child with dyslexia reads are paramount in designing a treatment plan.
Specifics include:
· A clear understanding of how readers begin to read- mastering phonemes and phonemic awareness.
· A clear understanding of the elements that go into making a successful reader that include: fluency, comprehension, vocabulary.
· A clear understanding of the approaches/strategies/interventions that are most successful with dyslexics.
· A clear understanding of exactly how much time needs to be allocated for each area of reading and what should be taught during that time.
· A clear understanding of exactly how children learn to read and why dyslexics struggle.
· A clear understanding of the importance of individualizing the approach to the child.
Shaywitz discusses ways to evaluate school programs and schools designed for dyslexics. How to pick a college, how to be successful in college or a post-secondary program are presented
She lays out what should and should not occur during the life of a dyslexic child. Other topics include adult dyslexia, dyslexia and ADHD and dyslexia and anxiety. Ways to remediate dyslexia in adults is also introduced.
This class is built upon the text Overcoming Dyslexia, 2nd Ed. by Sally Shaywitz, M.D. and Jonathon Shaywitz, M.D. It is based on scientific evidence and years of research delving into what makes the dyslexic mind “tick” and how to remediate those “ticks” so reading achievement is accomplished. Shaywitz introduces the reader to children and adults with dyslexia and their families. She provides us with a clear look at the agony this condition can cause and how it can be identified early and treated.
Sally Shaywitz is co-director of the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity. She has written more than 350 scientific articles and book chapters and created the Shaywitz Dyslexia Screen (trademark). Dr. Shaywitz has written books, articles and has lectured on the subject of dyslexia.
She is not only a pioneer in this field she is the premier voice of authority on dyslexia.

How Does This Course Support The Iowa Core?
This course supports the Iowa Core by teaching awareness of dyslexia, what it means, how it is identified and how it is remediated. It also will touch on dyslexia law and the rights and responsibilities of those who have dyslexia and their families. Students who suffer from dyslexia often display poor self-esteem and anxiety and see themselves as “dumb.” Shaywitz presents evidence that accurate diagnosis and remediation can guide the dyslexic to reading and academic achievement that result in the following outcomes for students across all subject/content areas and grades:
1. Higher grade point averages and scores on standardized tests or rating scales
2. Enrollment in more challenging academic programs
3. More classes passed and credits earned
4. Better attendance
5. Improved behavior at home and at school
6. Better social skills and adaptation to school
These results fall in line with the Iowa Core that states school preparation should produce the following:
1. Students who are college and career ready in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language.
2. Students who are proficient in English, language arts, history, social student, science, and technical subjects in all grade levels.
3. Students who are proficient in 21st century skills, such as critical thinking/problem solving, curiosity, collaboration and leadership, effective oral and written communication skills.
