ABOUT CURITIBA

Curitiba is the capital and, with 1.8 million inhabitants, the largest city in the state of Paraná in Southern Brazil. It sits on a plateau at an elevation of 930m (3058ft), approx. 80km (50mi) from the seaport of Paranaguá, one of Brazil’s most important seaports.

Curitiba was founded in 1693 and became state-capital in 1854. In the 19th century and after World War II it received a major influx of European immigrants, primarily from Germany, Italy, Poland, and Ukraine. In the 20th century there was a wave of immigrants from Japan, Lebanon and Syria. In more recent times significant numbers of Cubans and Venezuelans sought refuge in Curitiba.

Curitiba is Brazil’s eco capital and a national and global reference for sustainability and urban planning due to a comprehensive program that started in the 1970s. Curitiba boasts lots of green areas, a highly efficient rapid bus transport system, a well-established and diversified economy and good education.

Curitiba awaits your exploration with wonderful parks and iconic landmarks and an interesting hinterland.

Things to do and see in the city:

· Botanical Garden
· Tanguá Park
· Wire Opera House
· Oscar Niemeyer Museum
· Palace of Liberty
· Cathedral of Curitiba
· Passeio Público
· Garibaldi Square

It is an ideal place for excursions to the monumental sandstone rock formations, the coastal rainforest (there is a scenic train journey Curitiba - Morretes) and nearby beaches.
