COURSE OVERVIEW

Too often, math teachers hear, “When are we ever going to use this?” This course will provide you with a fantastic answer! Discover ways to transform your math instruction by including real-world relevance, cultural responsiveness, and equity. Design math lessons that connect to students' lives, and counter myths and misconceptions. Explore approaches like mathematical modeling, 3 Act Tasks, manipulatives, and story problems to build students’ skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and risk-taking. You’ll end the course with a solid understanding of the connections between math and the real world, making math relevant to all! 

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Apply strategies to make math connections to the real world.
• Analyze a math lesson to ensure diverse, inclusive and equitable practices are present in lesson design. 
• Address ways to counter math myths and misconceptions. 
• Create a teacher or student-generated Story Problem using a new instructional strategy.
• Infuse additional mathematical modeling in math instruction. 
• Reflect on professional growth and articulate how learning from this course focused on real world applications in math will impact students and the broader educational community.
