Suicide is one of the three leading causes of death world-wide for individuals aged 15-44. Each year the rate of young people who die by suicide increases. Despite large campaigns aimed to reduce suicide, rates continue to climb across demographic groups. Most people who experience a mental illness will not die by suicide, but of those who do, 90% have a diagnosable mental disorder. Mental health clinicians widely report that they do not receive training to confidently address the issue of suicide in treatment. Many continuing education courses focus on the issue from a risk management, rather than from a treatment perspective. All too often, clinicians and researchers are fearful when considering work with a suicidal population, sometimes avoiding the issue all together.
This workshop will teach a model of suicide assessment and intervention designed to reduce fear of suicide in clinicians and to allow them to make clinically-driven decisions based on empirical research. The Linehan Risk Assessment and Management Protocol will be used to structure the clinical interview and to document intervention.

- list all significant categories of long-term suicide risk.
- identify short-term and imminent signs of suicide risk.
- know where to find empirically based materials for risk assessment.
- describe general guidelines for managing suicide risk.
- understand the structure and how to complete the Linehan Suicide Risk Assessment and Management Protocol.
