Course Overview

NRP is an educational program that introduces the concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation. In Canada, NRP is administered by the Canadian Paediatric Society and is designed to teach individuals and teams who may be required to resuscitate newborn babies. NRP course content is evidence-based and delivered across Canada. 

Roles and Responsibilities of an NRP Provider:

  • Deliver care as per current national standards of care relevant to their profession and experience, recognizing that NRP is an educational tool and does not imply or regulate clinical competence to perform specific skills.
  • Review the provider manual and practice the skills of newborn resuscitation on a regular basis.
  • Maintain currency in neonatal resuscitation and changes to NRP guidelines and practice.
  • Know their own limitations, and seek resources and assistance when required.

Intended Audience:

  • Any health care provider expected to participate in neonatal resuscitation as part of their professional role.
  • Must be a licensed or regulated health professional, or a student of a licensed or regulated health profession. 

Course information:


The SickKids Resuscitation Education Program will be offering the NRP “Advanced Course” (Lessons 1-11 in the NRP textbook).   

  • Advanced Course Requirements: After completing the Online Learning Assessment, the NRP Advanced learner is required to take the NRP Advanced Exam (35 questions relevant to material in lessons 5 through 11). Then, within 30 days, the learner completes an Instructor-led Advanced course and attains an Advanced Card.  See details of online assessments further below on this page.  

How to Become an NRP Provider:

  1. Meet the registration guidelines as outlined in the Roles and Responsibilities of the NRP provider described above.   
  2. Pre-read the NRP textbook (8th edition) 
  3. Complete the online NRP exam within 30 days of the in-person course. Do not complete it earlier than 30 days prior.
  • Access the exam:  https://cps.ca/en/nrp-prn/online-examination 
  • 58$ Canadian to write the online exam (you pay this fee online to the vendor of the exam).
  • Click “Login/Register”.
  • You must create an account in order to purchase and access the exam. Of note, this is your account with the vendor for the exam. It is not the same account that you will have with Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS) to access your NRP certificate of completion.

You must complete 2 tasks to successfully complete the exam pre-requisite: 

  • Essentials Online Learning Assessment: 
  • Advanced Exam: 

Please bring a printed copy, or a screenshot that shows proof of completion of your exam pre-requisites. We are unable to see on the portal that you completed it. You must bring it with you. Ensure the printed copy and/or screenshot clearly shows your name, as well as indication of your successful completion. Please note you will not be permitted into the course if you cannot show proof of completion of the exam. 

 4.  Attend and complete the NRP in-person course. 

NRP Provider status is valid for 2 years. However, you may need to renew sooner to meet professional/institutional requirements. You can renew your Provider status by reading the textbook, successfully completing the online exam, and participating in a Provider course.

The textbook is available in the SickKids library, which is located on the third floor of the Patient Support Centre (PSC). There is no fee to borrow the textbook.

  • Please send your request now to ensure you receive the manual in time for your course.
  • You can also purchase materials from the CPS portal.

 

Accessing your NRP Certificate

Upon successful completion of an NRP provider course, your certificate can be accessed through the Canadian Pediatric Society portal:

If you have an existing account, please provide your instructor with the email address or account number on file on the day you attend the course.

If you do not have an existing account, your instructor will create one for you on the day of the course.

Attendance Guidelines

  • Please arrive 10 minutes prior to start time.
  • Attendance for the full day duration is mandatory.
  • Due to the volume of material this session covers, we will not be able accept late arrivals.
  • Late arrivals and those not participating for the full day duration will be asked to reschedule at their own expense.
  • PPE may be required during practice of skills.
