Mud Logging (3 Hours | Prerequisites: Introduction to the Oil & Gas Industry or Have Prior Industry Experience)

In this three-hour course, participants will gain a solid foundational understanding of mud logging — from its history and evolution to its current role in modern drilling operations. Students will explore how mud logging data is collected, interpreted, and compiled, covering key areas such as sample description, total gas analysis, gas chromatography, pore pressure, and directional data. The course also addresses how mud logs are used to identify potential pay zones, establish correlations, and detect over- and under-pressure conditions. Participants will additionally be introduced to the most commonly used software tools and digital and raster output formats in the industry. This course is ideal for anyone working in or entering the oil and gas sector who wants a practical, working knowledge of mud logging operations — particularly those in drilling, geology, or wellsite roles. Completion of the Introduction to the Oil & Gas Industry class is required prior to attending.
