COURSE OVERVIEW

Lesson planning can be one of the most stressful aspects of an educator’s job, even for the most veteran educators - but it doesn’t have to be. This course examines the first step in the process of backwards planning design: Writing Learning Objectives. It describes what effective learning objectives look like and how to construct a student facing objective based on your classroom learning standards. This course will allow you to develop objectives that are measurable and better aligned to your assessments and learning activities, to help you streamline your planning and improve your student’s performance. Through structured activities, reflection templates, checklist, resources, and more- you can re-examine your own classroom practices and identify methods for building more targeted objectives that will allow you to better assess your students, better design your lessons, and better improve your student’s progress.

Grade Level: K-12

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Understand, communicate, and analyze the three components that make up an effective learning objective.
  • Successfully “unpack” and analyze a standard to ensure we know all components of what students should be able to do within a lesson.
  • Analyze how to use Bloom’s Taxonomy and cognitive learning levels to create more balanced instruction.
  • Compose targeted supplemental resources to ensure action plan implementation into the classroom.
  • Analyze and defend research articles covering the main topics within the course, to reflect on the research’s impact in the classroom.
  • Plan, reflect, and report on implementation progress using a Classroom Implementation Plan.

Methods of Instruction:  tests, personal goal-setting, reflections on  articles/videos, class collaboration, a cumulative project, and a final practicum.  This course is delivered entirely online.
