EVENT OVERVIEW

How can we make math more accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all students? This two-day professional learning experience will explore the eight Mathematical Language Routines (MLRs) and how they can be seamlessly integrated into your high-quality instructional resources (HQIRs) to support learner variability and active engagement. Through hands-on activities and collaborative planning, you’ll discover practical strategies to enhance discourse, deepen mathematical understanding, and ensure every student has the tools to think, reason, and communicate mathematically with confidence.

LEARNING TARGETS

Learning Targets for Day 1: Foundations of Math Language Routines

  • I can explain the four design principles that support mathematical language development.
  • I can describe how Mathematical Language Routines (MLRs) enhance accessibility and engagement in math classrooms.
  • I can identify connections between MLRs and the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs).
  • I can analyze how language impacts student understanding and participation in mathematical discourse.

Learning Targets for Day 2: Application & Integration of MLRs

  • I can evaluate how MLRs are embedded in high-quality instructional resources (HQIRs).
  • I can plan for the integration of MLRs into my own instruction to address learner variability.
  • I can collaborate with peers to adapt or supplement HQIRs with MLRs to promote active student engagement.
