Summary - Transit State of Good Repair 2023

There has been significant focus on transit state of good repair (SGR) and transit asset management (TAM). The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act authorizes USD18.35 billion over five years for the SGR, including USD1.5 billion for the Rail Vehicle Replacement Program, and provides an additional USD4.75 billion in advance appropriations.

Transit agencies have also submitted updated TAM plans, aligned agency safety plans and TAM plans, deployed new technologies and leveraged data for effective asset management, trained workforce, developed organizational capacity, and undertaken lifecycle analysis. The objective has been to manage risks, minimize costs, and maximize the performance of assets as well as operate transit systems safely, efficiently, reliably and sustainably.

Going forward, some of the themes of discussion will include achieving zero-emission goals, replacing rail rolling stock, deploying sustainable buses, using performance based planning and programming for TAM, using decision support tools, prioritizing equity, accessibility and inclusivity, and so on.

Global Mass Transit is organizing the Eleventh Edition of the Transit State of Good Repair conference on March 09-10, 2023 in Washington, DC.

The mission of the conference is to highlight SGR and TAM opportunities given the funding available until FY2026.
