U.S. economic sanctions change quickly and reach well beyond U.S. borders, making them a growing source of legal and reputational risk for companies. This program gives in-house counsel a practical framework for managing that risk. It begins with the legal foundations: Office of Foreign Assets Control’s role, the main types of sanctions programs, the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List and the Bureau of Industry and Security 50 Percent Rule, and the reach of U.S. jurisdiction and secondary sanctions.

From there, it turns to the issues companies deal with every day. These include building an effective compliance program, screening and due diligence, and how sanctions overlap with export controls. The program closes with discussing voluntary self-disclosures, recent enforcement actions, and how violations commonly happen and how companies can reduce their exposure.
