COURSE OVERVIEW
Educators will cultivate an in-depth understanding of the critical roles of movement and play in the healthy development of children from birth to 2nd grade. Truly see the importance of play in early childhood. Teachers will learn through research based real-life examples, action-filled ideas, and best practices, all designed to help students learn and grow to their full potential. Learn how a moving child is a learning child in this colorfully captivating course.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Reflect on assumptions and insights of practitioners, researchers and self, focused on the connections between movement and learning
- Understand the critical necessity of movement and play in child development
- Design lesson plans incorporating the tenets of movement and play
- Communicate the importance of movement and play in healthy development to parents

Laura Thorvilson: My educational background is in Elementary Education. I earned a B.A. in Elementary Education with a Spanish minor from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, a M.A. degree in Curriculum and Instruction and an Ed.D. degree in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am currently completing my 18th year of teaching at the elementary level. In addition to teaching our youngest learners, I serve on the Continuing Education, Staff Development and Teacher Mentoring committees for the school district where I work. I enjoy supporting teachers in their quest to be life-long learners through my Learners Edge position as an Evaluator Lead.development trainer. I am also a certified mindfulness teacher and participate in the district-wide mental health and stress awareness initiative.
