On-Demand - Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome for the Outpatient Clinician: A Brief Overview and Screening Tools

Course Description:

This is a recording of the live virtual Inservice on September 25, 2025. This course aims to address common gaps in knowledge around hypermobility spectrum disorders and concurrent diagnoses.  This will be a brief overview of current testing and diagnostic criteria for hypermobility spectrum disorders including hEDS, as well as frequent subjective findings, and techniques for patient management.  This is a good course for anyone who struggles to accurately diagnose, treat, co-treat, or appropriately progress patients on the hypermobility spectrum or needs a refresher on current criteria for diagnosis and treatment.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

1. Utilize current best-practice screening tools for preliminary h-EDS and hypermobility spectrum disorder diagnosis.​
2. Determine appropriate referral sources and identify resources for patients that meet criteria for hypermobility disorders and associated symptom management.​
3. Apply current best-practice interventions for management of both systemic and local hypermobility with appropriate patients.

Bethany Newell, PT, DPT, CMPT, OCS

After receiving their Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas Woman's University in 2017,  Bethany left for cooler climates and has practiced in Portland for the last 8 years.  They immediately saw a need for specialized TMJ and hypermobility care in the community and started manual training for jaw and hEDS patients following their first year of practice.  In the process of learning how to provide the best care for their patients they have completed an orthopedic manual residency, achieved their CMPT and OCS, and continue to work with providers around the world through the EDS Society and other groups to try to bridge the gap between hypermobility patients and comprehensive medical care.
