Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

• Explain the purpose and value of integrating engineering into K–12 education, and describe how engineering supports student engagement, critical thinking, and real-world problem solving.
• Define engineering, identify major engineering disciplines, and use appropriate terminology to describe engineering processes and careers in the context of K–12 education.
•  Describe how engineering practices align with science and mathematics instruction, and explain how these practices support deeper understanding of content and cross-disciplinary integration.
• Explain the steps of the Engineering Design Process and demonstrate how to foster an engineering mindset in students through collaboration, creativity, and iterative problem-solving.
• Participate in and analyze classroom-ready engineering design challenges that engage students in applying science and math concepts to solve real-world problems.
• Design an engineering design challenge aligned to science or mathematics standards, incorporating clear criteria, constraints, and strategies for classroom implementation and assessment.

Target Audience

The MakerU: Embedding Engineering Practices into Science course is designed for K–12 science teachers, instructional coaches, and curriculum leaders interested in aligning science instruction with engineering practices through meaningful, problem-based learning experiences.
