Catch the 2027 Eclipse Where the Sun Meets the Sea — Gibraltar by the Costa del Sol!

Seeing a total eclipse is a true bucket-list adventure—and the best place to witness this spectacular event is in stunning Gibraltar. On Monday, August 2, 2027, the path of totality will sweep across the tip of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, causing the longest solar eclipse for decades. We invite you to join renowned eclipse expert Dr. Douglas Duncan for an unforgettable journey to experience it.  Gibraltar has been handpicked for its exceptional viewing conditions: crystal-clear skies, comfortable coastal breezes, and view of totality—without the extreme 100°F+ heat found in many other locations. Aboard the luxurious Sunborn Gibraltar, a five-star yacht hotel so glamorous that we booked it two years ago, you can expect breathtaking scenery, fascinating talks, and the signature camaraderie that make Dr. Duncan’s trips so special. Additionally, a free children's program provided by Jeff Bennett, author of the popular children's book "Max Goes to the Moon," will ensure that the whole family has a memorable experience.

Ready to experience the ultimate celestial event by the sea? Click “Register Now” at the top or bottom of the page to secure your spot. Dr. Duncan’s eclipse trips always fill quickly—often a year ahead of time—so don’t wait to reserve your place under the shadow of the Moon!

Trip dates: July 31 - August 3, 2027

More About This Trip: Total Solar Eclipse by the Sea

Gibraltar was carefully chosen two years ago by Dr. Duncan for its good weather prospects and comfortable, yet interesting location. Trip leader Dr. Duncan is a member of The Explorer's Club of New York City and has been to the North Pole and many deserts. Going to the Egyptian deserts in August is not something he advises, so he reserved a hotel in Gibraltar, where totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds. This is a bit shorter than the 6 minutes experienced in places such as Luxor, but the viewing conditions will be far more comfortable. Expect pleasant temperatures in the high 80s °F.

Our group will stay at the Sunborn Gibraltar, a one-of-a-kind luxury super-yacht hotel permanently docked right on the ocean. This floating hotel offers an extraordinary vantage point for both eclipse viewing and exploring Gibraltar’s world-famous landmarks. On a half-day tour during the program, guests will explore the highlights of this fascinating British territory, including a giant limestone cave and the Allies' headquarters from WWII, preserved just as it was when General Eisenhower was there.

The journey will begin and end in Málaga, Spain. Participants should plan to arrive at Málaga Airport on July 31. United/Lufthansa fly nonstop from New York to Málaga. Should you wish to fly into Madrid-Barajas Airport, for an additional fee of $250/person, our hosts will meet you at the airport, transfer you to the Madrid Atocha Train Station, and accompany you on the famous 180-mile-per-hour Spanish high-speed train to Málaga.

Many travelers may wish to extend their adventure before or after the eclipse trip to explore more of Spain. For that reason, we’ve partnered with Liberty International to provide a variety of pre- and post-eclipse trip options. Details will be available on the Pre/Post Trips page when available, with registration opening later in 2026.

Upon arrival, guests will be transferred to the AC Hotel Málaga Palacio for a welcome dinner and orientation talks. On the morning of August 1, the group will travel by bus to Gibraltar. Then, the eclipse will take place on August 2. The following day, August 3, the group will return to Málaga for departures.

Dr. Douglas Duncan, a veteran eclipse expert and former commentator for National Public Radio, the History Channel, and BBC, leads this journey. Known for curating engaging and friendly groups, Dr. Duncan invites some of the most fascinating speakers to join his trips—individuals who are always eager to connect and share their knowledge. You can learn more about them on the Speakers page.
