Summary
Ports are actively striving to reduce carbon emissions through the electrification of their activities and operations such as shore powering, cargo handling and drayage. Electrification of ports can be complex and managing all its facets requires a robust strategy, overhaul of existing infrastructure, and, very importantly, funding.
The federal government recently announced USD4 billion in funding to support the electrification of ports. Through Clean Ports Program, the government will invest USD3 billion in technologies to reduce pollutants and emissions at ports. It will invest an additional USD1 billion under its Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicle Program through which the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce vehicle emissions, including those used to move cargo in and around the ports. Several other federal agencies including the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) have funding programs and grants for greening the ports. Decarbonizing port operations has become crucial and collaborative efforts of the government, port authorities, terminal operators and industry are gaining momentum.
After organizing a successful conference on Port Electrification US in Long Beach in June 2023, Global Transmission is excited to announce the launch edition of its Port Electrification East conference to be held on November 8-9, 2023 at The Westin Jersey City Newport. The conference's mission is to highlight opportunities and solutions for the electrification of ports.
Given the increasing focus on decarbonizing port operations and the availability of federal funding programs, the conference comes at an opportune time. The conference will feature engaging panel discussions and insightful presentations on the challenges associated with electrifying ports, strategies for advancing greener ports, lessons learned from ongoing projects, relevant technologies, and best practices.
The event will bring together policymakers, port authorities, terminal operators, state transport departments, local government officials, technology providers, electric power utilities, logistics companies, charging solution providers, and industry experts to present their perspectives, share the lessons learned, and discuss solutions for accelerating port electrification.
