Buoyed by the prospects of floating wind energy, the Pacific Coast states are gearing up to develop a thriving offshore industry. California has an ambitious target of 25 GW by 2045 and has already secured five lease areas off its coast in an auction by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). These five areas can produce 4.6 GW of offshore wind power. Oregon could soon be home to two projects. BOEM has designated two draft areas in Oregon that together have the potential to support the development of 2.6 GW of offshore wind. Developers have submitted requests for leases in Washington as well.

To realize their offshore wind goals these states would need to prepare ahead and address the challenges posed by complex permitting requirements, constrained supply chains, and inadequate transmission grid infrastructure.

The availability of onshore and offshore grid capacity is crucial for the expansion of the offshore wind industry on the West Coast. In this context, Global Transmission Report will organize its 2nd annual conference on Offshore Wind Transmission West on March 13-14, 2024, at San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront. The mission of the conference is to discuss challenges and present solutions for building cost-effective and efficient transmission infrastructure in the western states for meeting offshore wind energy goals.
