Travel Information
Getting to Melbourne, Australia
✈️ By Air
Melbourne is served by Melbourne Airport (MEL), the city’s major international and domestic airport. It offers direct international flights from many global hubs, as well as frequent domestic connections from Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, and other major cities.
- International travelers: Please ensure you review Australia’s visa and entry requirements early.
- Domestic travelers: Multiple airlines operate high-frequency services into Melbourne, making it easily accessible from within Australia.
🚆 By Train (Within Australia)
Melbourne is connected to several major Australian cities by long-distance rail services.
- Sydney → Melbourne: An overnight XPT service is available.
- Adelaide → Melbourne: Regional train connections operate via Overland services on select days.
- Regional Victoria: V/Line trains connect many Victorian towns directly to Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station.
Rail travel in Australia can be scenic but may take significantly longer than flying; advance booking is recommended.
🚌 Local Transportation in Melbourne
Melbourne offers a wide range of reliable public transport options:
- 🚋 Trams: Extensive coverage throughout the city; the Free Tram Zone operates in the CBD.
- 🚇 Trains: Connect the CBD with outer suburbs through a large metropolitan network.
- 🚌 Buses: Serve areas not covered by train or tram routes.
- 💳 Myki Card: Required for most services (not needed in the Free Tram Zone). Available at stations, retailers, and airport kiosks.
- 🚖 Rideshare & Taxis: Easily accessible city-wide for point-to-point travel.
Visa Requirements
All international attendees traveling to Australia must hold a valid passport and obtain the correct visa or travel authorization before departing. Entry options vary by citizenship, so please check the specific requirements for your passport country before applying.
- Check Your Country's Requirements: Depending on your citizenship, you may need an Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601), an eVisitor (subclass 651), or a standard Visitor Visa.
- Applying for an ETA (Subclass 601):
- App Requirement: All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply using the official Australian ETA App (available on iOS and Android).
- Application Process: The app requires a mobile device with Near Field Communication (NFC) to scan your passport data page, read the ePassport chip, and capture a live photo.
- Cost & Stay: The ETA allows stays of up to 3 months per visit over a 12-month period. There is a AUD $20 service fee to submit through the app.
- Apply Early: While many ETA decisions are returned immediately, some applications require extra processing time. We strongly recommend completing your application well before finalizing travel plans.
For complete visa options and official guidance, visit the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or view the Electronic Travel Authority details.
