Earlier this spring, the Government Relations and Public Affairs Department hosted a Trustee Election Readiness workshop focused on why Catholic Trustee Elections matter and why democracy matters.

The workshop emphasized the importance of recruiting strong, progressive local candidates and explored strategies to reverse the decline in voter turnout for the municipal and Catholic school board trustee elections on October 26.

Now more than ever, strong local voices are essential—we cannot allow them to be silenced.

In September, we will continue the conversation with Part Two: Trustee Election Readiness: Strong Trustees, Strong Schools, Strong Communities. This workshop will focus on the election process, campaign strategies, and the resources available through the Government Relations and Public Affairs Department to help local units support and elect strong, progressive Catholic trustee candidates.

Participants will explore practical organizing and mobilization strategies, including how to engage members in campaign activities, connect with colleagues and community members, and encourage conversations within parishes and neighbourhoods. The workshop will also highlight effective ways to motivate colleagues, friends, and family to vote and help increase voter turnout.

To encourage meaningful discussion and address regional priorities, several Regional Catholic Trustee Election Readiness Workshops: Strong Trustees, Strong Schools, Strong Communities workshops will be offered. These smaller, regionally focused sessions are open to local unit presidents, designated release officers, local organizers or local unit activist, and Political Action Committee (PAC) chairs or designate and progressive trustee candidates supported by the local unit executive.
We encourage local units to invite progressive trustees who are supported by the local unit to participate in these sessions. Local unit presidents can share the session link directly with invited trustees, allowing them to participate virtually from their own location.

Alternatively, local units may wish to organize a watch party, providing an opportunity for supported progressive trustees to attend alongside local members and engage with the session collectively. This approach can also create an opportunity for local units and trustees to connect, discuss key issues, and build stronger relationships in support of publicly funded education.

Local units are encouraged to determine the approach that works best for their circumstances and to ensure that invited trustees receive the necessary information and access details in advance.

The deadline for these sessions will remain open until the day of the assigned regional workshop.
