Course Overview

Course Description

Communication isn’t just about what you say—it’s how you say it and how you listen. In this course, you’ll get to know your own communication style and how it impacts the way you connect with others. You’ll build practical skills like active listening, flexing your style to meet the needs of others, and framing your message to communicate with purpose. You’ll also pick up tips on reading and using body language to help your message land. These skills make it easier to collaborate, reduce misunderstandings, and work more effectively as a team.

Intended Audience

This course is great for anyone who wants to communicate more clearly, confidently, and effectively at work. The content resonates with those who are new to the workforce and those with years of experience.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Read body language and adjust their own to better nonverbally communicate their message and understand others
• Pause to frame their statement with purpose rather than reacting
• Listen actively to understand what others are trying to communicate
• Understand communication styles and how to flex their style to best communicate with partners
• Use a variety of communication methods effectively to meet the needs of multiple communication styles

Instructors

Erin George

Kane Learning: Learning & Development Consultant

Erin George supports leadership development through facilitation, coaching, and team building. Before joining Kane Learning, Erin worked in the home office of a specialty retailer as a Sr. Analyst and Facilitator in Learning and Development.

In addition to her work with Kane Learning, Erin is a founding board member of Women and Family Enrichment Services, a non-profit focused on helping vulnerable women and children in Northeast Florida. 

Erin is known for her passion in seeing individuals, leaders, and teams grow and develop in order to show up well and to do their best work. Erin holds a Master of Arts in Leadership (MACL) from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. 

Lisa Merz Russell

With over 20 years of learning and talent development experience, Lisa nurtures talent by focusing on the unique contributions leaders can make to grow their teams and the organization. Lisa translates insights into meaningful outcomes by highlighting the intersection of learning, connection, and strategic thinking.

After growing up in East Palestine, located in northeastern Ohio, Lisa established her family and career in the Columbus area. She has her Bachelors degrees in Communications and Spanish from The Ohio State University, then went on to earn her Masters degree in Human Resources also from The Ohio State University.

Throughout her career, Lisa has demonstrated leadership abilities in progressive roles within internationally-known organizations including Macy’s, L Brands, Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, and Safelite Autoglass. After leaving the corporate world, she brought her talents to Kane Learning; a boutique consulting firm with expertise in team effectiveness, people leadership, human resources, strategic planning, communications and marketing. Kane Learning has Fortune 500 companies, small business, and non-profits on their client list, all of whom benefit from custom delivered solutions.

Lisa is active in the community alongside her husband and 4 teenage children all of whom enjoy the outdoors, traveling, and trying out new foods.

Waitlist
What happens if I am on a waitlist for a course? You will receive an email confirming you have been added to a waitlist. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified by email.  

CEU and CPE Policy
Attendance in this course can earn:

• 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
• 7.2 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs)

Attendance is recorded at check-in at the start of the day, and full CEU or CPE credit is awarded based on an honor system, with the expectation that participants are present and actively engaged for the full MAPS course.

Course Certificate
Your course certificate will be emailed to you following the course. It will reflect your Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs) earned and your attendance of the course. 

Photography
The Ohio State University may occasionally take pictures during educational events for use in program communication. If you do not want to be photographed during this course, please email the MAPS team at glenn-training@osu.edu.

MAPS Membership 
A MAPS member receives a discounted rate of $250 for each course with the initial purchase of at least 12 credits. Each credit equals one course for one individual.
