The Pew Charitable Trusts

Join The Pew Charitable Trusts for an engaging discussion on heirs' property/tangled titles, a longstanding issue that affects housing stability, land ownership, wealth building, and community development across the United States. Drawing from Pew's ongoing exploration of these issues this event will highlight emerging research and policy opportunities to better understand and address these challenges.

The program will feature presentations from researchers at Auburn University and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. Speakers will share findings from across a variety of topics in the literature on heirs’ property, as well as early insights from exploratory data and policy analysis. Topics include:

  • A comparison of state policy addressing heirs' property
  • A discussion of innovative approaches for identifying and classifying heirs' property through geospatial analysis and property typologies
  • A new look at the trends in the literature and scholarship on heir’s property

Together, these presentations will explore how improved data, research, and policy design can help communities, practitioners, and policymakers better address barriers created by unclear property ownership.

Following the presentations, Sarah Stein, director of the FHLBank Atlanta Heirs' Property Law Clinic at Georgia State University College of Law, and Rachael Gallegos, Divisional Supervising Attorney in the Homeownership and Consumer Rights Unit at Community Legal Services of Philadelphia will join us for a fireside chat to discuss the real-world implications of heirs' property challenges across two major urban centers impacted by heirs property, highlighting the intersection of housing stability and legal services, and opportunities for policy and practice to support affected families and communities.

The afternoon will conclude with a networking reception, providing attendees an opportunity to connect with researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders interested in advancing solutions to heirs' property and related housing issues.

We hope you'll join us for this conversation at the intersection of research, policy, and practice.
