About CBIO Collaborative

The Circular Bioeconomy Innovation Collaborative (CBIO) is an ecosystem of over 130 multi-sector partners who collaborate to advance circular bioeconomy innovation and industry development. Anchored in California's North San Joaquin Valley, with statewide and global partnerships, CBIO drives use-inspired R&D, workforce development, industry development, and public policy solutions to enable the circular bioeconomy. CBIO is coordinated by a Core Management Team from BEAM Circular, UC Merced, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the Manufacturers Council of the Central Valley, WE Will! Regional K16 Collaborative, Modesto Junior College, and Merced College, and governed by a cross-sector Leadership Council of 25 members representing the Collaborative's broad membership.

Dr. Mary Maxon

Dr. Mary Maxon is Chief Strategy Advisor at BEAM Circular, and Research Affiliate at Caltech’s Linde Center for Science, Society, and Policy. Previously, she was Executive Director of the Biosciences Institute at Schmidt Sciences where she led a new effort to seed innovation in synthetic biology and theĀ bioeconomy. Dr. Maxon has worked in the private sector as well as the public sector, the latter highlighted by her tenure at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy where she was the principal author of the Obama Administration’s NationalĀ BioeconomyĀ Blueprint. She is a member of the International Advisory Council on GlobalĀ Bioeconomy; a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Standing Committee on Advances and National Security Implications of Transdisciplinary Biotechnology; and a member of the Carnegie Science Board of Trustees. Dr. Maxon serves as a biotechnology subject matter expert for Dr. Eric Schmidt, a Commissioner on the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology.Ā
