Greetings from Ithaca,

After what has been a historically cold winter here in the Finger Lakes region of New York, we are starting to see hints of seasonal transition in the form of higher temperatures for the first time in quite a while, a sure sign that spring is around the corner. Even if Punxsutawney Pete did see his shadow on Groundhog Day this year, we are all feeling optimistic, not only about our anticipated change in weather, but also because this signals to us that it is almost time for our favorite event of the year, the Fred Scott Feline Symposium.

The 38th annual presentation of this renowned continuing education event promises, as always, to be a stellar affair, with exclusive veterinary professional learning opportunities, unique social, networking, and dining experiences, and a beautiful, relaxed atmosphere that fosters communal learning and fun!

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Thomas Schermerhorn, the Morgan K Jarvis Chair in Veterinary Medicine and Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Schermerhorn is a recognized expert in small animal endocrinology and an outstanding speaker, and his talks on feline diabetes mellitus, hyperaldosteronism, acromegaly, thyroid-related disorders, and endocrine hypertension are guaranteed to be informative and engaging.

Other anticipated presentations provided by experts from right here at the College include an update from the Cornell Feline Health Center Feline H5N1 Surveillance Consortium and the 9th offering of our interactive pathology “Show and Tell” session, an attendee favorite that utilizes real-world case materials received by the Anatomic Pathology service here at the College to highlight disease pathogenesis and diagnosis.

Of course, we will also be providing the outstanding “extras” that the Symposium has become well-known for, including our wine and cheese welcome reception on Friday evening, our delicious Saturday evening dinner complete with live music, on-site massages at our “Kneading Station”, guided yoga/relaxation sessions to reenergize your spirit, and our virtual “Breakfast With Your Pets” that I very much look forward to hosting on Sunday morning.

An enlightening and pleasurable time is on tap for all of our in-person and virtual attendees, so mark your calendar now. We will be providing additional programmatic updates as we get closer to this cherished time when we all gather to learn together, support one another, and celebrate friends both old and new.
