This 2-credit, 4-week course is entirely self-paced. 

Participants will be expected to begin the course once registration is processed and an email has been received from the instructor with instructions on how to get started.

All assignments, discussions, and final project work are due at the end of the 4-week course to receive credit for the course.

 

Course Description

This course examines effective, research-based strategies for teaching mathematics to elementary students, with an emphasis on building conceptual understanding and fostering mathematical thinking. Participants will examine common developmental stages in mathematical learning and explore how young learners acquire foundational math skills. The course will address how to identify and respond to common misconceptions and error patterns, and how to scaffold instruction to support diverse learners. Participants will learn how to integrate manipulatives, visual models, and technology tools to enhance instruction and engagement. Special attention will be given to differentiating instruction, modifying materials, and designing inclusive lessons that support a wide range of abilities and learning styles. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with practical tools and strategies to create a math-rich, student-centered environment that promotes confidence and success for all elementary learners.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to...

  • Analyze the developmental progression of mathematical understanding in elementary students and apply this knowledge to guide instructional planning.
  • Identify common misconceptions and error patterns in elementary mathematics and develop targeted strategies to address them.
  • Implement research-based instructional practices that promote conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical reasoning.
  • Design and adapt math lessons and materials to meet the diverse learning needs of students, including those with disabilities and varying proficiency levels.
  • Integrate manipulatives, visual representations, and technology tools to support student engagement and deepen mathematical understanding.
  • Create an inclusive and supportive math learning environment that fosters a growth mindset and encourages all students to take risks and persist in problem-solving.
