Organized by the School of Environment and Institute for Carbon Neutrality at Tsinghua University, Nature Geoscience, Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy, Nature Cities, Nature Reviews Earth and Environment, and Communications Earth and Environment.

Climate change and air pollution are two important environmental challenges with great impacts on the planet and humans. Addressing one issue may have positive or negative effects on the other. The event aims to provide a platform for natural and social scientists as well as policymakers to discuss interactions of these two issues, benefits of tackling them, and actions for joint mitigation. 

This conference aims to provide a forum to present research in regards to:

Interactions between air pollution and climate change

Atmospheric aerosol, including aerosol linked to anthropogenic pollutants, contributes the largest uncertainty to estimates of the climate sensitivity to greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, climate change can affect the distribution and composition of air pollutants via its impact on atmospheric physics and chemistry from local to global scales. This session will discuss the underlying connections between these two research areas. 

Co-benefits of tackling air pollution and climate change

Mitigating climate change and controlling air pollution can bring additional benefits to the earth system and human society. This session will discuss these potential co-benefits.

Transition to a clean energy system

Climate change mitigation will require immediate, large-scale reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. This can only be achieved with the help of a fast transition to a clean energy system. This session will discuss renewable energy technologies, pathways to realizing such a transition, and resulting benefits for climate mitigation and air pollution control.

Air pollution and climate change mitigation

Climate change and Air pollution are two prominent environmental issues that need to be addressed by policymakers. There are trade-offs in tackling these two issues, and inadequate consideration of these trade-offs can negatively impact their mitigation outcome. This session discusses the information required by policymakers and the challenges they face in achieving an integrated approach that can help identify the most cost-effective solution to both problems and facilitate its implementation in cities around the world.
