Course Description:

This course equips K-6 educators, interventionists, instructional coaches, and administrators with the skills to analyze student data for Tier 2 intervention planning, ensure alignment with the core curriculum, and monitor progress effectively. Participants will learn how to identify needs, select or design appropriate interventions, and evaluate their effectiveness within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will…

  • Participants will explain the role of Tier 2 supports within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) by distinguishing Tier 2 from Tier 1 and Tier 3, and identifying appropriate types of data (e.g., screening, diagnostic, progress monitoring) used in Tier 2 decision-making.
  • Participants will analyze multiple sources of student data (e.g., universal screening, diagnostic assessments, and progress monitoring tools) to identify students in need of Tier 2 supports, uncover specific skill gaps, and detect patterns that inform intervention planning.
  • Participants will evaluate the alignment between Tier 2 interventions and core curriculum by conducting a curriculum analysis and using an alignment map to ensure that supports supplement rather than supplant Tier 1 instruction, thereby maintaining instructional coherence.
  • Participants will design and justify Tier 2 intervention plans that include measurable goals, progress monitoring tools, and alignment to core instruction. Plans will include decision rules for adjusting support based on student progress and incorporate strategies for team collaboration and equitable practices.
  • Participants will reflect on and apply principles of effective data use by auditing their current Tier 2 data practices, identifying areas for improvement, and adapting protocols or systems to ensure timely, equitable, and informed intervention decisions.
